Case Study Guidelines

The review panel relies heavily on the case studies you submit to evaluate your application for certification. A case study is an in- depth analysis of your work with a single household. It provides you an opportunity to demonstrate your mastery of the Core Competencies required for certification. Please review the core competencies document provided on the IAABC website thoroughly before beginning your case studies.

The specific format for a case study can vary greatly. In some instances, your case study will focus solely on the specific animal(s) and human(s) involved. Others might require citing relevant research and background information on a particular topic. Supporting documentation such as history forms, functional analysis, client handouts or reports to referring veterinarians are always welcome. Regardless of your approach, please provide detailed explanations of the case background, your assessment, intervention, and outcome in a manner that demonstrates your core competencies.

Use the following format for guidance on how to structure a case study.

I. Case History

1. Background Information
The first section of your paper will present your client's background. Include factors such as household composition (e.g. species, age, gender, breed, etc. for all household members), health status, training history, diet, exercise, circumstances under which pet came into the home, etc. Submit history forms or other supporting documetation where applicable.

2. Description of the Presenting Problem
In the next section of your case study, you will describe the problem as presented by your client or referring animal professional. Describe any problem behaviors. All relevant details such as injuries, destructive behavior, or limits on animals' or humans' daily lives should be provided. Also include previous attempts to address the problem and any diagnosis by other animal professionals. A description of the client's disposition towards the problems (human family members' goals, expectations, willingness to keep the animal, and social dynamics) should also be included in this section.

3. Behavior Analysis
Provide your analysis and explanation of the behavior problem. Support your analysis with details from the client's history, your own observation, and any reports from other professionals. Include citations when appropriate as well as any possible difficulties in reaching a definition of the problem.

II. Intervention

The second section of your paper will focus on the intervention used to help the client.

1. Recommendations
Provide a detailed description of all recommended protocols for behavior modification as well as recommendations for management or referral to another professional. Explain the reasoning behind all recommendations and include citations where appropriate. Submit written materials provided to clients as supporting documentation where applicable.

2. Outcome
Describe progress including effectiveness of protocols, client compliance with recommendations, any modifications to recommendations, etc. Provide explanations for successes, failures, and changes to your approach.
