Certification with IAABC in an ongoing, participatory, “organic” process
designed to enhance learning.
The current process provides excellent screening and works consistent with the resources we have.
During 2006 Standards for the Dog division will function autonomously and completely separate from the board. The other divisions are working towards transitioning to board independent review.
Participants in the process leading to certification include the following: Applicants, Tracker, and Reviewers
Ø Applicants send materials to the designated Tracker, by mail or e-mail (Tracker listed on applications)
Ø The Tracker starts a file and keeps a checklist. If she spots obvious problems/issues calling for attention, she alerts applicant
Ø Applications are not complete until the following have arrived: Application

Application fee-$125.00
Ø When application materials are complete, the Tracker sends one copy of the record to each Reviewer
Ø Reviewers make a decision about Associate membership
Ø The Tracker, with Reviewer approval, Accepts for Associate Membership, or Denies Associate Membership. If an Applicant is accepted for Associate, they are asked to pay Associate member dues (or the difference between Affiliate and Associate member dues)
Ø If the Applicant accepts Associate membership, the Tracker notifies Reviewers who will pose questions and engage the Applicant in ongoing discussion.
Get Acquainted Period:
Ø The get-acquainted period for Associates may last from several months to over a year. Standards wants to get to know our applicants and give applicants opportunities to know the IAABC, understand the profession, develop professional identifies, and develop their skill, knowledge and ethics base.
Ø In addition, Standards wants applicants to become acquainted with educational opportunities that are member benefits---tutorials, guided studies, panel discussions, etc., to discover how well these formats “work” for them. This gives applicants and reviewers valuable information before setting the provisional plan for certification.
CONFIDENTIALITY/PRIVACY FOR APPLICANTS:
Standards Trackers and Reviewers treat any information about applicants as confidential and makes every effort to protect the privacy of applicants, i.e. to not share private communications even among themselves unless there is a compelling reason. All discussion among Reviewers is kept confidential/private long-term.
CONFIDENTIALITY FOR REVIEWERS:
Members will not know who is reviewing their applications and setting their provisions for certification. All communications are directed through the Reviewer.
It is expected that Applicants will respect the confidentiality/privacy of communications from Standards Trackers and Reviewers to Applicants.
ROLE OF REVIEWERS
Ø Reviewers generally have questions for applicants, pose scenarios, and ask for information in addition to what is provided by Applicants. These questions are funneled through the Tracker.
Ø Reviewers set provisions for certification.
Ø Trackers ask Applicants for feedback on their provisions for certification. Applicants may negotiate for revisions in their plans and are encouraged to present alternative, preferred educational opportunities that may meet the same learning need.
CERTIFICATION TIPS
Ø Standards does have objective criteria for assessing applications, organized around the five core areas.
Ø Standards does not have a set number of credits or education units that members must earn to qualify for each area of competency. At this point such a system would be meaningless.
Ø IAABCs Certification Exam Commission is developing objective testing as another measure of proficiency. This will be in addition to currently existing measures.
Ø Applicants are expected to evidence an ability to negotiate issues and to embrace core values of the profession throughout the application process: positive regard, confidentiality/privacy, a nonjudgmental approach, diversity and openness, and respect for client and colleague right to self-determination.
