IAABC APPROVED MENTOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Approved Mentors are bound by the IAABC Code of Ethics, IAABC Practice Guidelines, and the Responsibilities detailed below.

  1. IAABC Approved Mentors may supervise Associate members who are seeking IAABC Certified Membership, and Certified members wishing to expand their skill base. Trainees will be awarded CEUs for entering in to a supervisory relationship with an IAABC Approved Mentor.

  2. Conversation between the IAABC trainee and the mentor is face to face, by phone, or e-mail.

  3. The learning process should be sustained and intense.

  4. Supervision focuses on raw data from an IAABC member’s continuing practice

  5. Supervisors are responsible for an initial screening to evaluate the trainees knowledge of theory, practice skills, and ethical responsibilities.

    • A contract should be developed for the supervision, which delineates fees, hours, time and methods for meeting, case responsibility, case review, handling of potentially dangerous client situations, and so forth. Supervisors should recognize their legal responsibilities for cases seen by trainees. Both mentors and trainees should have liability insurance coverage.

    • The mentoring fee is a function of the contract between mentors and trainees, including amounts and collection procedures. Fees should be in keeping with the IAABC standard.

    • The major emphasis on supervision should be on the trainee’s work with clients.

    • The progress of trainees should be periodically reviewed according to pre-determined supervisory goals, and evaluations should be shared and discussed with trainees. Should a mentor develop significant concerns about the abilities, philosophical beliefs, or practices of a trainee, the concerns must be shared with the trainee and documented in writing as early as possible. Supervisors do not disclose trainee confidences except in limited circumstances described in the IAABC Code of Ethics.

    • Supervisors must provide supervision reports as needed by trainees, such as those required for IAABC membership.

Geographic Hardship: Associate members who live in areas where there is no compatible choice of Approved Supervisors within 20 miles may fulfill the mentoring hour requirement by telephone and e-mail. They are encouraged to present videotaping of animals and their habitats.
