Dogs and children are a familiar combination that can lead to wonderful bonds and lasting memories. Nineteen million American families have both kids and dogs in the home.
Training techniques that emphasize rewarding desired behavior are easy, effective, and enjoyable to implement. One common technique involves holding a treat in front of a pup’s nose and then slowly moving the treat upwards. As the puppy’s head moves up, the puppy’s bottom will move downwards. When the puppy sits, the owner gives the puppy the treat.
Problem behavior in companion animals in families can also often be prevented by using techniques that are non-confrontational and emphasize safety. For example, resource guarding (guarding of toys or food) can be prevented with a young puppy that does not already show aggressive behavior by simply taking away a puppy’s toy, giving the puppy a delicious and healthy treat, and then giving the puppy the toy back. The puppy quickly learns that it is wonderful when people take away objects. A pet owner can establish a leadership relationship with a dog by controlling access to things the dog enjoys (toys, going for a walk, treats, petting) and asking the dog to perform a basic obedience skill before granting access.
If a pet is already exhibiting a behavior problem, the pet owner should contact a qualified dog behavior consultant http://www.iaabc.org/consultant_locator_dogs.htm . Animal behavior problems are complex and require a holistic approach and in-depth assessment. Additionally, medical problems may underlie or contribute to behavior problems. A veterinarian can assess the pet’s health.
